This award, which brought together recipients from the six geo-political zones, was held at the General Secretariat of The Redemption Camp, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos.
The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, said the award was aimed at cushioning the challenges of the rural poor in accessing quality education in Nigeria.
Adeboye, who was represented by his special adviser on personnel and administration, Pastor Johnson Odesola, said education remains the bedrock for a productive society and the most important weapon against social vices that is jeopardising the future of the youths.
He said the scholarship and bursary award is put at about N15million and covers students from junior secondary school to tertiary level. The beneficiaries were selected through an entrance examination for all applicants,” he added.
He said “It is the responsibility of the Christian community to take care of the poor within their immediate environment as that would help rid our society of social miscreant.”
“We need to develop a workable intervention plan to guide the poor out of their vulnerable conditions and into optimism and productivity, both spiritually, and academically.
Odesola reinstated the commitment of the church toward ameliorating the challenges of the rural poor;
He said: “The scholarship award is open to members and non-member of the church through recommendation.”
“The redeemed Church has spent over N1.2billion on various community projects, which include building of maternity clinic, public toilet, digging of free boreholes, distribution of cars to police and distribution of Information, Education and Communication Technology (ICT) materials to schools across the country,” he stressed.
“We need to take a decision to build Nigeria together because there is no other place that we can call our own but Nigeria, the future of Africa.”
Also speaking, The Chairman, RCCG, Central Mission Board, Pastor Brown Oyieso enjoined the students to keep their head above their shoulders and study hard as the church will be appraising their results on a regularly basis.
Responding, one of the recipient of the award, Ajaguna Sijuade who lauded the effort of church said that the award was timely, apt and a succor to so many families across the country.
He prayed for the church and promise to continue to work hard and represent the church in good light anywhere he goes. Source
