Sex workers fight for space in the Avenues

HARARE – Commercial sex workers plying their trade in the Avenues area of Harare are fighting for space as they jostle for clients; a week after most of their clients received their salaries.

With most workers battling to make ends meet, the number of prostitutes has increased significantly and they now jostle for places. The battles are intensifying in areas considered lucrative while those out muscled out are resorting to opening new spots. The women have also grouped themselves in what might soon become gangs. Some of the prostitutes revealed that they are actually married. One of the prostitutes is married to a prominent footballer (name supplied). “Please do not publish my picture because my marriage will be destroyed and my husband is not aware of my whereabouts,” said one of the women. “As you know that the players are in off-season so I have to look for alternative income. Some of us lie to our relatives and husbands that we are on night duty and if you publish us it will make our lives difficult,” she added. Others said they were not willing to ‘waste’ time with journalists as interviews did not earn them an income.
