Designer Biography: Emmy Collins

Emmy Collins is often described as an “avant-garde designer with a knack for sitting on the sharpest of edges in fashion excellence”. His creations are always a refreshing and daring change from what one is used to with other designers.

The Dutch citizen of Nigerian origin has the signature creations of retro wide-lapel jackets and drainpipe trousers. These are part of his latest creations and are reminiscent of the 1950’s rock and roll style.

Emmy’s fashion influences include the legendary Afro beat musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti who had a sartorial penchant for smart, well fitted clothing often embellished with afro centric embroidery. His other icons include Jimmy Hendrix, Al Green and Lenny Kravitz.

Even though the talented designer has settled in London, his visits and presence in the Nigerian fashion world is still very prominent and he was one of the designers featured at the 2012 Lagos Fashion And Design Week.

His ensembles do not hold back on the colour swatch and are made from the finest of fabrics. His recent play with accessories resulted in items like skinny silk print ties and chunky bow ties that come in an array of black, plaid and neon colours for that added touch of spice to outfits.
