The body of 30-year-old Auwal Haruna, a student at the Nigerian Law School Abuja, was found dangling from a ceiling fan at Mairiga Guest Inn Takum, in Taraba State. He allegedly committed suicide.
Until his death, Haruna was reportedly a suspect in a murder case in which his younger brother is suspected to have connived with their mom to murder their father, Vanguard reports.
There appears to be a rise in suicide cases in Taraba. Joseph Kwaji, the state Public Relations Officer, attributes this rise to frustration and drug abuse.
In February, two males committed suicide in Jalingo. One was a 32-year-old 400-level Taraba University student named, Samson, who allegedly poisoned himself because he could no longer afford to pay his school fees. The other was Saidu Babura, a 45-year-old watchman who hung himself on a tree as a result of a rumoured battle with drug abuse.
“Suicide is not the solution to our problems. Killing oneself is not only contrary to the laws of the land, but also against our religions,’’ Kwaji said.
