American doctors offer free treatment in Wakiso

By Cecilia Okoth

Hundreds of residents from Kireka-Biira and neighbouring villages of Wakiso district have received free treatment from a team of 26 doctors and paramedics from the United States of America.

The doctors, who are in the country for a week, will give treatment to the communities of Kireka-Biira, Busega, Bulenga, Masanafu, Nansana, Bukasa, Bujuuko, Nateete in Wakiso for three days and in Masaka for four days.

The doctors were invited by Hope for New Life Ministries in Kireka-Biira, a Christian church and NGO that prioritizes in health, women and orphanage programmes.

Christine Muwanga, the cheer leader for the project and a member of the church said the doctors are part of an international Christian church called 4Square gospel church and is a sister church to Hope for New Life Church.

“They chose to come to Uganda to treat and promote health awareness to the most vulnerable people in the society. They will treat both children and adults,” Muwanga said.

Rev. John Kamanzi, the Director, Hope for New Life Church said many people around the community are helpless and would rather seek witch doctor services than go to a hospital for help.

“Most people cannot afford the consultation fees that hospitals ask for before offering any treatment to them. Some believe in witchcraft while others are simply negligent and do not want to go for general checkups,” Kamanzi noted.

Dr. Vena Ricketts, a Professor of Medicine and the head the medical camp said they were set to treat diseases ranging from Back and abdominal pain, fever, malaria, skin diseases, fungi, diarrhea, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart screening.

“Most of the people coming in have the above illnesses. So we shall offer them treatment and for those that are complicated and need follow ups, we shall recommend,” Dr. Ricketts said.

The medical doctors according to Muwanga will visit Uganda annually and offer treatment to the poor.   Source
